IIT Madras Partners with OpenMentor to Bring Online Education to Rural Students in Uttar Pradesh
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, in partnership with 'Vidya Shakti,' an initiative of OpenMentor, is launching an educational program to provide online classes and virtual reality (VR) learning experiences to students in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh. OpenMentor is the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative of Softsmith Infotech Private Limited.
The primary objective of this initiative is to address the "knowledge gap" that has widened between students from urban and rural areas due to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The online classes will focus on teaching fundamental language skills, as well as Mathematics and Science subjects.
The program has already been implemented in 100 villages within the Varanasi district. The classes are conducted in Hindi medium and cater to students in Classes 6 and 8.
The adoption of various technologies has contributed to increased student retention levels. STEM tutors will use VR headsets during the classes to provide an immersive learning experience. By using sensors, students will be able to "feel" and interact with the educational content. Additionally, short 3D videos are utilized to explain concepts in Science and Mathematics. These visualizations are made interactive through question and answer sessions to enhance student engagement and participation.
During each session, a STEM tutor will carry three to four VR devices and visit one school in the morning and another in the afternoon. After a brief explanation of the concept, students will be divided into small groups to view the VR videos.
The IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation serves as the technology innovation hub of the institute. It is a not-for-profit company funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
This collaborative effort between IIT Madras and OpenMentor aims to bridge the educational divide between urban and rural students by leveraging online learning tools and VR technology. By providing access to quality education, the initiative seeks to empower students in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh and equip them with essential skills for their academic and personal growth.
