IIT Guwahati and Coursera launch online BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, JEE Score Not Required
IIT Guwahati, in partnership with Coursera, has announced the launch of an online Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The program aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in these cutting-edge fields. Unlike traditional programs, this online degree does not require a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main score for admission.
The applications for the BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence program will commence on July 19, 2023, with classes scheduled to begin in October 2023. The program offers flexibility with multiple entry and exit options. Students who complete the first year will receive an Advanced Certificate, while those completing the second year will receive a diploma. A normal BSc degree will be awarded upon completion of the third year, and a complete BSc Honours degree will be granted after four years of study.
Eligibility for the program is not limited by an upper age limit. Any student who has studied Mathematics in Class 12, regardless of their academic stream (Science, Commerce, or Humanities), is eligible to apply. JEE Main score is not mandatory for admission, but candidates who are eligible and registered for JEE Advanced will be granted direct admission. Students without JEE Advanced eligibility can still gain entry by completing an online course and demonstrating their performance.
The program also emphasizes practical experience and offers internship opportunities for students. IIT Guwahati will provide a campus immersive program to further enhance students' practical skills. The course material has been designed by IIT Guwahati's faculty and industry experts.
One notable feature of this program is the extended duration available for degree completion. Students have a total of eight years to finish the degree, providing flexibility for working professionals and those with other commitments. The entire course will be conducted online, eliminating the need for students to worry about travel or related issues.
IIT Guwahati and Coursera will jointly offer career and counseling advice to enrolled students, ensuring they receive guidance and support for job placements.
When questioned about concerns regarding Artificial Intelligence replacing human jobs, Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, the director of IIT Guwahati, dismissed such notions. He emphasized that historically, whenever new technologies have emerged, similar concerns have arisen, but humans have always found ways to leverage technology to enhance capabilities, simplify tasks, and increase efficiency. Prof. Iyer believes that AI will aid in managing the vast amount of data generated today and improve overall efficiency.
In conclusion, IIT Guwahati's collaboration with Coursera to launch the online BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence provides an excellent opportunity for students interested in these fields to acquire specialized knowledge and skills. The program's flexibility, absence of age limitations, and emphasis on practical experience and internships make it an attractive option for individuals seeking to pursue a career in data science and AI.
